Obituary

On Sunday, April 14, 2019, Elmer Joseph Lutz, loving husband and father of five, passed away at home surrounded by his family. He was 85.
Elmer was born on October 28, 1933, to Marian L. (Reed) Lutz and Henry Edwin Lutz, at the family farm in Summit Station, PA. He attended the Local One Room Schoolhouse and Cressona High School, graduating in 1950. He then enlisted in the US Air Force. On May 20, 1955 Elmer married the love of his life, Eleanor Keller. Together they raised 5 children; Randall, Ronald, Jeffrey, Leslie and Keith. He served in Viet Nam and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 23 years of honorable and loyal service to his country. Elmer then had a 20-year career as an underwriter for Nationwide Insurance in Harrisburg, PA.
Elmer had a passion for travel. He and Ellie traveled the world during his service in the Air Force and after his retirement. Their exploits are well chronicled in slides, film and photographs that are enjoyed by the entire Lutz Family. He was known for his quick wit and his kind and compassionate spirit. No visitor left his house with an empty stomach or without a personal escort down the driveway and onto the street.
Elmer is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ellie; children Randy Lutz, Ronnie Lutz, Jeff and Shawn (Wright) Lutz, Leslie (Lutz) and Jeff Beale, and Keith and Susan (Morgan) Lutz, and 15 grandchildren Mallory (Lutz) Seroskie, Shelby Lutz, JD Lutz, David Beale, Katie Lutz, Sheridan Lutz, Taylor (Lutz) Crampton, Brandon Beale, Joseph Lutz, Karleigh Lutz, Morgan Lutz, Dylan Beale, Davis Lutz, Margaret Lutz, and Samantha Lutz.
A viewing and service will be held beginning at 11:00AM on Thursday, April 18, 2019 at Myers-Harner Funeral home in Camp Hill, PA. Interment will follow at 2:00PM at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. The entire Lutz family extends thanks to their many friends and family for all the loving support. “I’d like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun”

To the Family: May the God of comfort, Jehovah God, strengthen the family during this difficult time in your lives. Those who are sleeping in death (John 11:11) God keeps in his memory because they are precious in his eyes. Look forward to the fulfillment of the promise at Acts 24:15, “ ... there shall be a resurrection of the dead...”

Deepest sympathies to the entire Lutz family in the passing of Elmer. I will always cherish how welcoming he was to me as Sue and Keith's friend.

I had the privilege to work with Elmer at Nationwide. A true gentleman, a big-hearted, caring, kind man. He never seemed to get upset about anything except someone being critical of this great country. A true patriot and not afraid to show it. I am honored to have known him.
